Travel day

by Jack Grant

I’m flying today to San Francisco to attend a technical conference there. In the Austin airport a travel gadget store had backpacks and briefcases with solar panels on them to recharge all the stuff people carry around now when they travel. I haven’t decided if it’s a good idea or too geeky for words.

Probably both…

Despite the wi-fi in the airports and all the gadgets now available that make travel less unpleasant (noise cancelling headphones are great!), I find that I dislike travel more each time I do it. This is the first business trip I’ve taken since I got married, and leaving my wife this morning was no fun. Parting was made even worse because she has been feeling below par. It bothers me to see her unwell, and I really hate leaving when she isn’t 100%.

It’s not that she can’t survive without me, quite the contrary, she was a single mom for almost a decade and succeeded at that almost impossible life. It just feels wrong to leave on a trip when she’s not well, even though it seems to be just a cold, and even though my travel is for my job.

Oh, well…
