Those who pay no attention to history are doomed to repeat it

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

Interesting quote. Hermann was right, of course. The Germans bought Hitler’s story of German border guards being attacked by the Poles, and the rest is history.

While the quote remains true, I don’t know if it’s very apt for our situation. Pacifists and anti-Iraq war protestors have a good deal of public opinion on their side. And they certainly aren’t cowed by being told they are working against their country.
