Some are seeking a storm over ports

by Jack Grant

I was all ready to write a post about the misconceptions involved between port management and port security when it comes to who manages what, but Daniel at Bloggledygook has beaten me to it, and in the process expressed all the frustration I feel about those who react first instead of seeking out the facts and thinking before bloviating.

As I request repeatedly, think before you react.

Is it demagougery of the first order? absolutely….

But it isn’t about the ports. What it is really about is the elections of 06 and 08. For Republican politicians, especially those who want to run for President in 2008 “Secure the border” is the going to be a huge issue. Now if you want to look like you are securing the border when in reality you are doing no such thing (because it is against your intrest) this is a perfect political move.

If you are a Democrat within the current political theme they have (Everything George Bush does makes the country less safe, kills kittens, and makes baby jesus cry) this is also a perfect way to act like they are doing something and in reality do nothing.

so their are two political threads getting in the way of sense.

it has nothing to do with Xenaphobia or Igonrance and has everything to do with subconcious and concious political issue pushing

I can only speak from my previous experiences as a driver taking loads at ports ranging from San Diego to Oakland, and all in between on the Cali coast.
Objections on this over security issues are farsical(I’ve commented on this over at Castle Argghhh and AFSis’s joint). Even under the old regimes ports are large hole sieves. The current regime cannot keep crewmen from the docked ships from going to town for a night of fun.

Jingoism is a fair charge this time Jack, I tip my hat to ‘ye.
