Personally I always use the phrase “It crashed.”. OTOH, the number of times that the non-technical people tell me that the computer crashed on them when what they mean is that some of the antique in-house software locked up is amazing. I take anything the end-users say with a salt mine and start asking questions to get them to specify what happened every time.
