"The divisions inside the nation forced the politicians to change policy in such a way that abandoned South Vietnam and effectively lost the war.”

  It should be remembered that the prevailing goal of the predominate politicians of the time was to fight the Vietnam War without derailing their domestic "Great Society" plans.  If that doesn't fit hand in glove with Kerry's statements with regard to our spending too much money on the Iraq war I don't know what would.  Those who do not study history are condemned to repeat it.  We'll soon see whether or not those of the baby boom generation, so many of whom were more than happy to avoid service in Vietnam, are willing to look at their own actions from a historical perspective and learn from their mistakes or are still as self-indulgent and short-sighted as they were in their youth.
